“I owe my soul to the company store….”

From the Island Creek Coal Mine in Earlington, KY, this script or coupon book was sold to the coal miners for their families to purchase merchandise from the Company Store.  That merchandise was generally over-priced but the miners could get these coupon books by signing that the cost would be deducted from their wages.

A great piece of American coal mine history.
